Hundreds of officers have been struck and killed by motor vehicles during traffic stops, crash investigations, and tire deflation device (TDD) deployments—making struck-by incidents one of law enforcement’s leading causes of line-of-duty death. TDD operations alone have claimed 50+ lives and ended hundreds of careers. Many losses are preventable. This presentation examines roadway risks and evidence-based solutions: tactical positioning, passenger-side approaches, reflective gear, and emerging technology. Drawing on national data and real incidents, participants will gain practical, low- or no-cost strategies that can be immediately implemented across agencies of all sizes.
